The number of women homebuyers has nearly doubled in the last twenty years. Married couples are the largest group of homebuyers with unmarried women as the second-largest group. In 2004 single women were about 20 % of the market. Single men made up only 8% of the market.
The increase in single women purchasing homes has been one of the factors driving up demand for townhomes and condominiums. These types of properties appeal to single women for safety and practical reasons. Women homebuyers are more prone to upgrading which has boosted demand in the home improvement industry. The large number of women as buyers has also forced lenders to offer more programs geared toward buyers other then the traditional husband and wife as in previous years.
