Beach City Birthdays

2007 is the year for some special celebrations in our local cities....

Hermosa Beach just turned 100 on January 14, 2007

El Segundo celebrated it's 90th Birthday on January 18, 2007

Manhattan Beach will turn 95 this year

Redondo Beach.. the oldest beach city turns 115 this year in April

While many people have just found our local communities we have a lot of history to share.

El Segundo was started by Standard Oil as the second of it's sites in Ca. which is how it got it's name.... El Segundo means the second. In the late 30's Mines field was built to accomodate the widespread interest in aviation.. which of course became LAX

Manhattan Beach was finally incorporated at the insistence of the women of the Neptunian Woman's Club who pushed their husbands to make us a city. Even today when there is a city office election the candidates all come to the Neptunian Woman's Club to voice their platforms before the general election.

Hermosa Beach almost didn't get started. The vote to incorporate was passed by one vote.. 24 to 23. Could have been because when the Hermosa Land and Water gave the city the deed to the land there was a clause that no liquor could be sold in the city. This lasted until prohibition was voted out.

Redondo Beach was the resort city on the west coast for many years. The Red Cars took thousands from the heat of the city to the breezes of the ocean. The ritzy Hotel Redondo had 225 rooms, tennis courts and an 18 hole golf course. For the less wealthy visitor there was a tent city where you could rent a tent for $3.00 for a week or $10.00 for a month. The tents had wooden floors and included electric lighting.
